Applied Economic Research Co., Inc. is an energy consultancy based in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

We specialize in power industry economics and analysis as well as quantitative and statistical analysis, modeling, and forecasting for industry in general.

Founded in 1983, the firm started work in power plant performance and forecasting electricity supply and demand. Later, they brought frontier analysis to coal plants, a groundbreaking move, to help explain cost efficiency.

The firm has also worked with and conducted a wide range of projects and studies for an extensive list of the major companies in the power industry, as well as industry organizations, law firms, and regulatory bodies.

AER has conducted a variety of studies in the areas of industrial, regulatory, energy, and environmental economics, with an emphasis on statistical and econometric analysis of the issues. These include a wide range of work in power/energy economics including demand-supply-price modeling, analyses, and forecasting; competitive market analyses;  national and regional market analyses; market pricing analyses and forecasts; effects of deregulation; cost-efficiency and competitive benchmarkiing; generation asset valuation and “going forward” costs; “stranded cost;” quantification of operating effects on plant expenditures; plant aging effects on reliability and required expenditures;  plant economics for power purchase contract arrangements; as well as litigation support, expert testimony, cross-examination preparation, etc. for litigation and regulatory matters.

AER has special strength in the application of quantitative, statistical, and econometric techniques to the analysis of complex multivariate problems involving large multidimensional databases.

Their studies have received widespread attention from industry, Congress, Public Service Commissions, the financial community and the energy consumer.  The results of AER's studies have been widely quoted in both trade press and the working press, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Fortune.  Founder Dr. Marie Corio has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Power Subcommittee on the need for additional electricity capacity in the 1990s.  She has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including the "MacNeill Lehrer News Hour" and the "Today Show," discussing the implications of electricity capacity shortages--particularly on consumers.

Like the industry itself, today AER has expanded its work to include renewable energies.
